" We do not believe in ourselves until someone reveals that deep inside us something is valuable, worth listening to, worthy of our trust, sacred to our touch. Once we believe in ourselves we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight or any experience that reveals the human spirit.:  - E.E. Cummings

What I love most about this quote, other than it's obvious truth about the power of human connection,  is that it reveals that wonder and delight are qualities of the human spirit.

We are not machines. Although the brain functions much like a computer, we are far more than our minds. We have this capacity for joy and "spontaneous delight" that machines never will.  It is a quality that keeps us undeniably human. Delight and joy are necessary.  Without them, life loses it's magic. We loose touch with the wonder of life.   And, the amount of things that had to go right for life to even exist is so astounding that wonder actually makes more sense than apathy. To revel in the extraordinary invention of anything in the natural world and to try to comprehend the perfection of it and the level of intelligence that is behind something as everyday as an eyeball or an ant or a child - actually puts us more in touch with reality. That level of wonder is a more sane than than boredom or dullness. Wake up your senses. Let the sparkle of life light you up again. Risk spontaneous delight.
